Using martingale techniques reminiscent of \textit{S. Takahashi} [Stud. Sci. Math. Hung. 10(1975), 93-98 (1977; Zbl 0355.60030)], the author obtains a central limit theorem for Walsh series which satisfy an arithmetic (rather than regular) lacunarity condition. The author also shows that both hypotheses of his main result are essential and includes a concrete example to show how his main result applies to subsystems whose elements are packed more densely than the regular lacunary barrier \(\alpha={1 \over 2}\).
