The author proves that the \(L^ p\) spectrum of uniformly elliptic divergence form operators on a complete Riemannian manifold \(M\) is independent of \(p \in [1,\infty]\) if the volume of \(M\) grows uniformly subexponentially. The latter condition is satisfied if the Ricci curvature of \(M\) is bounded from below by a function \(K:M\to\mathbb{R}\) satisfying \(\lim \inf_{x \to \infty} K(x) \geq 0\), \(x \in M\), in particular, if the Ricci curvature is nonnegative. The author proves also that the \(L^ p\) spectrum depends on \(p\) if there exists a (globally defined) volume density on \(M\) which grows exponentially in every direction. This condition is satisfied if \(M\) is simply connected and if the sectional curvature of \(M\) is bounded from above by a function \(K:M \to \mathbb{R}\) satisfying \(K \leq 0\) and \(\lim \sup_{x \to \infty} K(x)<0\). For instance, it is satisfied for the hyperbolic space. Some similar results were obtained by \textit{M. A. Shubin} [Astérisque 207, 35-108 (1992; Zbl 0793.58039)].
