A methodology based on the measurement of the natural frequencies of the structural system is developed for identification of the magnitude and location of the material defects and/or cracks. The numerical procedure is based on the matrix-transfer technique in which the dynamic characteristics of the system are related from one end to the other end via a transfer matrix. Numerical algorithms based on the multi- dimensional Newton-Raphson search technique are developed to enable systematic determination of the faults in the system.
