The paper concerns with numerical simulation of subsonic unsteady free shear flows. The difficulties arising when specifying the inflow and outflow boundary conditions are discussed, the limitations of traditional simplified approaches being indicated. The recent approaches to open boundary conditions based on the characteristic forms of one-dimensional Euler equations are reviewed. Testing numerical experiments are performed and analyzed. The significance of the upstream influence of the outflow boundary conditions is emphasized.
