The fifth volume of the ``Handbook of numerical analysis'' (see Zbl 0689.65001, Zbl 0712.65091, Zbl 0806.65001 and Zbl 0864.65001 for Volumes I (1990), II (1991), III (1994) and IV (1995), respectively) contains the second part of the contributions to ``Techniques of scientific computing''. Part 1 is contained in Volume III. The present second part is devoted to the following techniques of scientific computing: 1. Numerical path following by E. L. Algower and K. Georg (pp. 3-207) 2. Spectral methods by C. Bernardi and Y. Maday (pp. 209-485), 3. Numerical analysis for nonlinear and bifurcation problems by G. Caloz and J. Rappaz (pp. 487-637), 4. Wavelets and fast numerical algorithms by Y. Meyer (pp. 639-713) and 5. Computer aided geometric design by J.-J. Risler (pp. 715-818).
