Let \((A,B,C)\) be a minimal balanced realization of an asymptotically stable system with distinct Hankel singular values, where \(A\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}\), \(B\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times q}\) and \(C\in\mathbb{C}^{p\times n}\). The authors show that \(U^*AU\) is a stability matrix for any \(U\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times r}\) \((r<n)\) of full column rank. So the stability result by \textit{L. Pernebo} and \textit{L. M. Silverman} [IEEE Trans. Autom. Control AC-27, No. 2, 382-387 (1982; Zbl 0482.93024)] can be extended to the case of projections of balanced realizations with distinct Hankel singular values. The case with nondistinct Hankel singular values is also treated.
