The paper studies the approximation and bifurcations of limit cycles in nonlinear dynamic systems. Using the harmonic balance method low dimensional algebraic frequency conditions for such bifurcations are derived. All different generic kinds of loss of stability are considered. Several examples, including Duffing's equation and differential equations with delay, indicate that the proposed method yields qualitatively good approximations.
