Various proofs are known that Schur algebras of type \(A\) and their quantized versions are quasi-hereditary. All of these proofs are exploiting the relations between Schur algebras and the infinite general linear groups. The paper under review presents a new approach. Using the well-known Schur-Weyl duality one may define Schur algebras as endomorphism rings of certain representations of symmetric groups or Hecke algebras. A criterion is given for such an endomorphism algebra to be quasi-hereditary. Apart from computations with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis, the key ingredient is a vanishing result for certain cohomology groups, from the authors' previous paper [J. Algebra 203, No. 1, 169-210 (1998)].
