The article is concerned with error estimates for finite difference approximations to singularly perturbed second-order ordinary boundary value problems. A comparison is made between different (non-equidistant) meshes and approximation schemes. In particular, a scheme is proposed which provides an \(O(n^{-4})\)-error and thus improves the \(O(n^{-4}\ln^4n)\)-error obtained by other schemes and meshes. Numerical experiments illustrate the results.
