    A sign-sensitive weight \(p=(p_-, p_+)\) is a pair of nonnegative functions \(p_-, p_+\in C(\Delta)\), where \(\Delta\) is a compact interval. Let \(x^+ =x\) for \(x\geq 0\), \(x^+ =0\) for \(x<0\) and \(x^-= (-x)^+\). For \(f\in C(\Delta)\), the following seminorm \[ | f|_p= \sup \biggl\{\bigl |(f,p) (x)\bigr|: x\in\Delta \biggr\} \] with \(|(f,p)(x) |=f^+ (x)p_+ (x)+f^- (x)p_- (x)\) is used. The best approximation of \(f\) in the metric \(|\cdot |_p\) from algebraic polynomials of degree \(\leq n\) and from rational functions of degree \(\leq n\) are denoted by \(E_n (f,p)\) and \(R_n (f,p)\), respectively. The author proves a Jackson-type theorem for \(E_n (f,p)\) and \(R_n (f,p)\). In the case \(\Delta= [-1,1]\) and \(f(x)= \text{sign} x\), two-sided estimates of \(R_n (f,p)\) are given.
