This paper is concerned with orders in algebraic number fields, classes of matrices and their connection with ideal matrices and generalizations where the order does not have a power basis. (For the definition of the concepts involved which go back to Poincaré and were studied by \textit{C. G. Latimer} and \textit{C. C. MacDuffee} [Ann. Math. (2) 34, 313--316 (1933; Zbl 0006.29002)], see earlier papers by the author and also a recent paper by\textit{G. B. Wagner} [Math. Ann. 183, 241--249 (1969; Zbl 0209.36002)]). One of the key issues here is to obtain the product of two matrix classes via the product of ideal matrices. However, the solution obtained depends on a certain unimodular matrix which is not, in general, easy to construct.
