Let \(C\) be a coalgebra and \(S\colon C\to C\) be a coalgebra antimorphism. The author constructs a Hopf algebra \({\mathcal H}(C,S)\) as a quotient of the tensor bialgebra \(T(C)\) of \(C\), and proves some universal property of \({\mathcal H}(C,S)\). Several examples are given. In particular, \(\text{SL}_q(2)\) arises as a Hopf algebra of the form \({\mathcal H}(C,S)\), where \(C\) is the \(2\times 2\) matrix coalgebra.
