The authors consider the inverse eigenvalue problem (IEP) for symmetric matrices whose graph is a generalized star or a double generalized star and characterizes the corresponding possible lists of ordered multiplicities, settling the IEP in the case of a generalized star. The result is consistent with the conjecture that the determination of the possible ordered multiplicities is equivalent to solving the IEP for a given tree. Also, generalized stars are characterized among trees by some spectral feature.
