It is well-known [\textit{K. Goebel}, Compos. Math. 22, 269--274 (1970; Zbl 0202.12802)] that if the modulus of convexity \(\delta_X(\varepsilon)\) of a Banach space \(X\) satisfies \(\delta_X(1)>0\), then \(X\) has uniform normal structure. Less well-known is the result of the author and \textit{K. S. Lau} [Stud. Math. 99, 41--56 (1991; Zbl 0757.46023)] that if \(\delta_X\left(\frac32\right)> \frac14\), then \(X\) has uniform normal structure. In the present article, the author generalizes these results by showing that if \(\delta_X(1+\varepsilon)> \frac{\varepsilon}{2}\) for some \(0\leq \varepsilon <1\), then \(X\) has uniform normal structure. Reviewer's remarks: The author mistakenly states that this result also holds when \(\varepsilon = 1\). But a result of Goebel in the paper cited above notes that \(X\) is strictly convex if and only if \(\delta_X(2)=1\). If the author's result held for \(\varepsilon = 1\), then all strictly convex spaces would have uniform normal structure, and this is not true. The author's proof uses the continuity of \(\delta_X(\varepsilon)\) and this function may fail to be continuous at 2.
