    Die neun Coefficienten einer orthogonalen Substitution sind zuerst von Euler, und zwar in zweifacher Weise, durch trigonometrische Functionen dargestellt worden. Diese Coefficienten, die Euler'schen Winkel und ihre trigonometrischen Functionen lassen sich mit Hülfe von zwei beliebigen Argumenten durch die vier Jacobi'schen Thetafunctionen, und mit Hülfe von vier beliebigen Argumenten durch die ungerade Thetafunction allein ausdrücken. Die Resultate, von welchen einige bereits früher in den C. R. CVII. 859-862, 901-903, 937-938 veröffentlicht wurden (s. F. d. M. XX. 1888. 479, JFM 20.0479.01; JFM 20.0479.02), werden zum Schluss auf Probleme der Rotation angewandt.
