Die Summe einer Reihe von \(x\) Grössen \[ u_1, u_2, u_3, \ldots u_p \ldots u_x \] mag mit \(U_x\) bezeichnet werden. Für das Produkt zweier solcher Reihen gilt alsdann die Beziehung: \[ U_x V_x - \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} (u_p V_p + v_p U_p) + \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p v_p = 0. \] Eine entsprechende Entwickelung giebt es für das Produkt \(U_x V_x W_x\). Sind die 3 Reihen identisch, so folgt: \[ U_x^3 - 3 \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p U_p^2 + 3 \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p^2 U_p - \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p^3 = 0. \] Auf ähnliche Weise geht schliesslich die allgemeine Formel hervor: \[ U_x^n - n_1 \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p U_p^{n-1} + n_2 \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p^2 U_p^{n-2} + \cdots (-1)^n \sum_{p=1}^{p=x} u_p^n , \] worin \(n_1\), \(n_2\), \(n_3\)\dots die Bimomialcoefficienten der \(n^{\text{ten}}\) Potenz sind. Wird in dieser Formel \(u_p = 1\) gesetzt, so ergiebt sich: \[ x^n - n_1 S_{n-1} + n_2 S_{n-2} - n_3 S_{n-3} \ldots \pm S_0 = 0. \] Hierin bedeutet \(S_m\) die Summe der \(m^{\text{ten}}\) Potenzen der ersten \(x\) Zahlen. Im Folgenden werden über diese \(m^{\text{ten}}\) Potenzsummen der natürlichen Zahlen noch mehrere rekurrente Formeln entwickelt, von denen zwei hervorzuheben sind: \[ (x+1)^m = m_1 S_{m-1} + m_2 S_{m-2} + \ldots m_1 S_1 + S_0, \] \[ \frac {m+1} {2} \,S_m^2 = S_{2m+1} + (m+1)_2 B_1 S_{2m-1} - (m+1)_4 B_2 S_{2m-3} + (m+1)_6 B_3 S_{2m-5} \ldots , \] \(B_1\), \(B_2\), \(B_3\) sind die Bernoullischen Zahlen, zu deren Berechnung schliesslich die hinlängich bekannten Formeln abgeleitet werden.
