In Chapter 1 the authors introduce the concept of financial engineering, describe its relation to financial risk management and reports. The limitations of the traditional optimisation framework with regard to financial engineering are discussed and a new context is introduced based on the multicriteria decision approach. In Chapter 2 the methodological framework of Decision Support Systems (DSSs) is presented. Some applications of DSSs in credit risk assessment, portfolio selection management are also presented. Chapter 3 is devoted to the presentation of the Expert Systems (ESs) technology. Emphasis is given on topics related to knowledge engineering, as well as on the knowledge acquisition and representation processes. Some applications of ESs to financial management are presented. Chapter 4 focuses on the integration of DSSs and ESs within the framework of Knowledge-Based Decision Support Systems (KBDSSs). The contribution of alternative artificial intelligence techniques, including neural networks, fuzzy sets, rough sets, case-based systems and genetic algorithms are presented. Chapter 5 extends the methodological framework of KBDSSs trough the investigation of the new capabilities provided by the combination of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence in general with multicriteria decision aid. The final chapter of the book discusses some issues regarding the implementation of intelligent DSSs to the financial engineering practice. Some guidelines of future research are presented. The book under review is a competent monograph devoted application DSSs in financial management. Unfortunately, all problems are only described superficially.
