Let \(E\) be a real Banach space, \(C\) a nonempty closed subset of \(E\), and \(T,S\) mappings from \(C\) to \(C\). For \((\alpha _n)\) and \((\beta_n)\) sequences in [0,1], the author considers the following iteration schemes: (1) \(x_{n+1} = \alpha_nT(\beta_nTx_n+(1-\beta_n)x_n) +(1-\alpha_n)x_n\), \(n\geq 1,\) and (2) \(x_{n+1} = \alpha_nTy_n+(1-\alpha_n)Sx_n\), \(y_n = \beta_nTx_n+(1-\beta_n)x_n\), \(n\geq 1.\) The iteration scheme (1) was proposed by \textit{S. Ishikawa} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 44, 147-150 (1974; Zbl 0286.47036)], and contains as particular case (\(\beta_n=0\), \(n \in \mathbb N\)) Mann's iteration scheme [\textit{W. R. Mann}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 4, 506-510 (1953; Zbl 0050.11603)]. A mapping \(T:C\to C\) is called \(\lambda\)-firmly nonexpansive, for some \(\lambda \in (0,1)\), if \(\|Tx-Ty\|\leq \|(1-\lambda)(x-y)+\lambda(Tx-Ty)\|\), \(\forall x,y \in C\). \textit{R. Smarzewski} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 113, 723-725 (1991; Zbl 0734.47039)], proved the existence of fixed points for any \(\lambda\)-firmly nonexpansive mapping on any subset of the form \(C= \cup_{i=1}^n C_i\), where \(C_i\) are nonempty bounded closed convex subsets of a uniformly convex Banach space \(E\). The author studies the weak convergence of the iteration scheme (1) for the Smarzewski fixed point theorem, improving some results obtained by \textit{B. K. Sharma} and \textit{D. R. Sahu} [Bull. Calcutta Math. Soc 88, No. 4, 285-290 (1996; Zbl 0881.47042)]. He proves also the weak convergence of the sequences given by (2) to a common fixed point of two mappings \(T,S\) on a subset \(C= \bigcup_{i=1}^n C_i\), where \(C_i\) are nonempty closed convex subsets of a uniformly convex Banach space \(E\) satisfying Opial's condition or having a Fréchet differentiable norm. One supposes that \(S,T\) have a common fixed point and that \(tT(sTx+(1-s)x)+(1-t)Sx \in C\) for all \(x\in C\) and all \(s,t\in [0,1]\).
