    Let \(S\) be a monoid with zero. A sequence \(\cdots\to L\xrightarrow {f}M\xrightarrow {g} N \to\cdots\) of \(S\)-systems is called `exact at \(M\)' if \(\ker g=(f(L)\times f(L))\cup\varepsilon_M\). A sequence \(0\to L\to M\to N\to 0\) is called `Rees short exact' if it is exact at \(L\), \(M\) and \(N\). The article gives conditions for a Rees short exact sequence of \(S\)-systems to be left and right split, respectively. Examples are given showing that some results of \textit{R. Z. Zhang} and \textit{K. P. Shum} [Semigroup Forum 52, No. 3, 253--270 (1996; Zbl 0851.20061)] are not correct.
