An example of a simple irreducible subsemigroup of the full linear group \(GL_ 2({\mathbb{Q}})\), which is not a group, is constructed. This solves Problem 9.1 from the survey paper of \textit{I. S. Ponizovskij} [Semigroup Forum 24, 117-148 (1982; Zbl 0491.20053)].
