A Banach space has the fixed point property if, for every nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset \(C\) of the Banach space, every nonexpansive mapping of \(C\) into itself has a fixed point. In [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl.\ 68, No.\,8 (A), 2303--2308 (2008; Zbl 1151.46006)], \textit{P.-K.\thinspace Lin} solved a long-standing open problem in metric fixed point theory by proving that there exist nonreflexive Banach spaces with the fixed point property. In the article under review, the authors extend the techniques in Lin's paper to obtain several new classes of nonreflexive Banach spaces with the fixed point property. In particular, the authors prove that the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra \(B(G)\) of a separable compact group and some nonreflexive subspaces of \(L^1(\mu)\) can be renormed to have the fixed point property. For example, the authors prove that, if \(\mu\) is a \(\sigma\)-finite measure and the unit ball of a closed subspace \(X\) of \(L^1(\mu)\) is relatively sequentially compact for the topology of convergence locally in measure, then there exists an equivalent norm \(|||\cdot |||\) on \(X\) such that \((X, |||\cdot |||)\) has the fixed point property. Whether \(L^1[0,1]\) is renormable to have the fixed point property remains an open problem. For some related results, the interested reader may want to look at the recent articles of \textit{H.\ Fetter} and \textit{B.\ Gamboa de Buen} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser.\,A, Theory Methods 71, No.\,10 (A), 4598--4608 (2009; Zbl 1181.46013)]; \textit{P.-K.\thinspace Lin} [J.\ Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 362, No.\,2, 534--541 (2010; Zbl 1187.46005)]; and \textit{P.\ Dowling, P.-K.\thinspace Lin} and the reviewer [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser.\,\ A, Theory Methods 73, No.\,3, 591--599 (2010; Zbl 1209.46005)].
