The authors consider the Cauchy problem for the viscous shallow water equations. Under the assumption that the ``height'' of the fluid surface does not differ too much from the constant value they show, for arbitrarily large initial condition for the horizontal velocity \(u\) in \(H^{2+s}\), \(s>0\), that there exists locally in time the unique strong solution. If the data are sufficiently small then the solution is global in time. The technique of the proof is based on the successive approximation scheme and on the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.
