The authors prove a conjecture of \textit{H. Stichtenoth} and \textit{C. Xing} [Manuscr. Math. 86, 217-224 (1995; Zbl 0826.11054)] stating: Let \(g\) be the genus of a projective, irreducible, nonsingular algebraic curve over the finite field with \(q^2\) elements attaining the Hasse-Weil upper bound. Then either \(4g \leq (q-1)^2\) or \(2g = (q-1)q\).
