Fix a prime \(p\), and let \(\mathcal K\) be the category of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra. For an elementary abelian \(p\)-group \(V\), J. Lannes constructed a functor \(T^ V: {\mathcal K}\to {\mathcal K}\) with the property \(T^ V(H^*(X;\mathbb{F}_ p))=H^*(\text{Map}(BV,X);\mathbb{F}_ p)\). Given an element \(R\) of \(\mathcal K\), the functor \(T\) is used to construct a new functor \(\alpha_ R\) from a certain category \(A_ R\) to \(\mathcal K\). The main result says that, for suitable \(R\), there is a natural isomorphism between \(R\) and the inverse limit of \(\alpha_ R\). An example of a suitable \(R\) is the cohomology of \(BG\) where \(G\) is a compact Lie group. In this case, the above result gives a new proof of a recent decomposition theorem for \(BG\) due to Jackowski and McClure.
