Two bases \(\{ f_n\}_n\) and \(\{g_n\}_n\) of a Banach space \(X\) are called equivalent if there exists an isomorphism \(T : X \to X\) satisfying \(T f_n = g_n\). It is proved that wavelet bases and a family of brushlet bases of exponential type are equivalent unconditional bases for the Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. The isomorphism \(T\) is explicitly constructed for the Meyer wavelet/brushlet system. As an application of this equivalence, new results on nonlinear approximation with brushlet systems in Triebel-Lizorkin spaces are deduced.
