A ``complex structure'' on the tangent bundle of a (real) compact or complete Riemannian manifold is defined to be an integrable, almost complex tensor \(J\), \(J: T(TM)\to T(TM)\). The author proves several theorems about local and global existence of such a tensor. Local existence always holds; the obtstructions to global existence are identified.
