In this paper, local operator spaces are introduced. It is shown that for local operator spaces realized as subspaces of unbounded operators on a Hilbert space and considered as quantizations of locally convex spaces, there exist several theorems that correspond to those for operator spaces (that are thought as quantized normed spaces) of Effros and Ruan, such as Ruan's representation theorem, the Arveson--Hahn--Banach--Webster extension theorem, Stinespring's theorem, and Paulsen's off-diagonal trick. Injectivity for local operator spaces is also studied.
