In a previous paper, the authors proved the complete integrability of classical and quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian systems of Toda lattice type [ibid. 83, 355-386 (1982; Zbl 0503.22013)]. In the present paper, they study the solutions in the classical periodic and nonperiodic cases. The solutions are expressed in terms of an Iwasawa-type decomposition of a ''large'' Lie group, which is a split finite-dimensional real semisimple Lie group G in the nonperiodic case and an infinite-dimensional real Banach-Lie group in the periodic case. The main results in the nonperiodic case are synthesized as follows by the authors: ''The generic Hamiltonian systems of nonperiodic Toda type are linearly imbedded in the action of a vector group on the real flag manifold for G.'' In the periodic case, the solutions are given by a generalization of Kostant's formula for the nonperiodic case [\textit{B. Kostant}, Adv. Math. 34, 195-338 (1979; Zbl 0433.22008)].
