A variety of situations where mixed symbolic numerical calculations are essential for analyzing a differential-algebraic equation (DAE) is considered. Using a specific example from robotic path control of (differential) index 5, difficulties of the computation of derivative array equations and their integration are discussed in detail. A qualified introduction into the theory of DAEs basing on the differential index definition is given. In \textit{S. L. Campbell} and \textit{W. Marszalek} [Numer. Algorithms 19, No. 1-4, 85-94 (1998; Zbl 0929.34003)], see the review below, traveling wave solutions to implicit PDEs using DAEs are analyzed.
