Symmetric Runge-Kutta methods are investigated and it is shown that the extrapolation of the usual compositions of a symmetric method cannot be \(A\)-stable. The use of a nonsymmetric and possibly \(L\)-stable symmetrizer, which preserves the \(h^ 2\)-asymptotic error expansion, overcomes this restriction. A characterization of \(L\)-stable symmetrizers for 2-stage symmetric methods is given and studied for a particular stiff model problem.
