A preconditioned Krylov subspace method (GMRES) is used to solve the linear system of equations of the unsteady two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The Navier-Stokes equations are discretized in an implicit, upwind finite-volume, flux-split formulation. Several preconditioning techniques are investigated to enhance the convergence speed of the implicit solver based on the GMRES iteration. The present iterative solver is compared with a conventional implicit solver, namely the line Gauss-Seidel relaxation. The study of preconditioners reveals that a new LUSGS-type preconditioner is much more efficient than a conventional incomplete LU-type preconditioner.
