Let G be a finite group and let \(p\in \pi (G)\). The authors define a generalized Frattini subgroup of G as follows: \(S_ p(G):=\cap \{M|\) \(M\in {\mathcal J}_ p\}\), where \({\mathcal J}_ p\) is the set of all maximal subgroups of G of composite index which is not divisible by p. Of course, \(S_ p(G)\) is a characteristic subgroup of G which contains the Frattini subgroup \(\Phi\) (G). The analogy between \(\Phi\) (G) and \(S_ p(G)\) relies on the following good behaviour of \(S_ p(G):\) Theorem 2.2. If \((p,| S_ p(G)|)=1\), then G is supersolvable iff \(G/S_ p(G)\) is supersolvable. Another result (Theorem 2.1) asserts that if p is the largest prime divisor of \(| G|\) and if \({\mathcal J}_ p\) consists of nilpotent groups only, then G is p-nilpotent or G has a normal p- subgroup H such that G/H is p-nilpotent. The paper contains other (more technical) results concerning a property which is close to supersolvability and which involve the family \({\mathcal J}_ p\) where p is the largest prime divisor of \(| G|\).
