A linear unbounded operator \(B\) on a Banach space \(X\) whose spectrum is contained in an open set \(V\) is said to be of \(\alpha\)-type \(V\) if \((w- B)^{-1}\) exists for \(w\not\in V\) and is \(O((1+ | w|)^ \alpha)\) for some \(\alpha\geq -1\). For such operators the author defines a functional calculus \(f\mapsto f(B)\) defined for holomorphic functions on \(V\) whose real part is bounded above, such that \(f(B)\) generates an exponentially bounded \((\lambda-B)^{-m}\)-semigroup, where \(m=[\alpha]+2\). The map \(f\mapsto f(B)\) is a continuous algebra homomorphism. Moreover, several spectral theorems are obtained. The paper contains also several applications in particular to some classes of first and second order Cauchy problems, including the Schrödinger equation, the Laplace equation and the backwards heat equation.
