This paper is concerned with the asymptotic expansion in powers of the stepsize for the global error of general discretization methods for ordinary differential equations. A new proof of the asymptotic expansion for the global error is given for one-step methods which is extended to a very general class of methods by considering them as ''one-step'' methods in a higher dimensional setting. Some consideration is also given to showing how even power expansions of the global error can be obtained.
