Let F be a coherent sheaf on \({\mathbb{P}}^ n\). F is said to be m-regular if \(H^ i(F(m-i))=0\) for \(i>0\). It is well known that the regularity of F will give information about the degrees of the generators and syzygies of the graded module corresponding to F. By using induction and restricting F to a general hyperplane, the author observes that one can give a bound on the regularity of F by a function depending on the dimensions of the groups \(H^ 1(F(-1))\), \(H^ 2(F(-2)),...,H^ n(F(-n))\). In particular, if X is a smooth projective subvariety of \({\mathbb{P}}^ n\) and \(Char(k)=0\), then one bounds the regularity of \({\mathcal O}_ X\) by a function depending on \(h^ r({\mathcal O}_ X(-r))\) where \(r=\dim (X)\). Furthermore, the author shows that one can obtain a more refined bound by considering depth(F) and the dimensions of the linear span of the associated points (prime ideals) of F.
