A suitable notion of a generalized Hessian is introduced and it is shown how this Hessian can be used to approximate solutions of variational problems by means of piecewise linear functions. As a guideline of arguments properties of \(\Gamma\)-convergence are used. Convergence is proven under technical restrictions.
