The authors apply Morse theory to a general relativistic version of Fermat's principle. Thereby they find existence and multiplicity results for lightlike geodesics joining a point to a timelike curve in a Lorentzian manifold that satisfies certain causality conditions. The reviewer has the impression that, unless in the two-dimensional case, these causality conditions are equivalent to global hyperbolicity.
