A group of type \(H\) (Heisenberg type) is a connected simply connected two-step nilpotent Lie group with some additional structure. The Iwasawa \(N\) groups of all real rank one simple Lie groups are groups of type \(H\). A theory of the Fourier transform of homogeneous distributions on these groups is developed, and the cases of the Iwasawa \(N\) groups are examined in detail. In particular, this involves examination of the octonion algebra to treat the \(N\) group arising from the exceptional group \(F_{4,-20}\). A curious feature of this paper is that no mention is made in the text of the bulk of the listed references.
