Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\) with smooth boundary \(\Gamma\), and let \(\lambda_ 1\) and \(\varphi\) denote the first eigenvalue and the corresponding eigenfunction of the problem \(- \Delta u = \lambda u\) in \(\Omega\), \(u = 0\) on \(\Gamma\). The authors study the following two biharmonic boundary value problems: \[ -\Delta^ 2u + \lambda^ 2_ 1u + g(x,u) = f \quad \text{in} \quad \Omega, \qquad u = \Delta u = 0 \quad \text{on} \quad \Gamma, \tag{1} \] and \[ - \Delta^ 2 u + g(x,u) = f \quad \text{in} \quad \Omega, \qquad \partial u/ \partial n = \partial (\Delta u)/ \partial n = 0 \quad \text{on } \Gamma. \tag{2} \] When \(g(x,u)\) has linear growth in \(u\) and \(f \in L^ p(\Omega)\), \(p > N/3\), \(\int_ \Omega f \varphi dx = 0\), the problem (1) is shown to have a solution in \(W^{4,p} (\Omega)\). A similar result is obtained for the problem (2).
