The author develops a purely algebraic approach to Poisson structures \(P\) (or Jacobi structures, more generally), on an associative commutative algebra \(V\) with unit. The standard example for \(V\) is of course the algebra of smooth functions on a symplectic manifold \(M\), with ordinary multiplication, and for \(P\) the Poisson bracket. But the general algebraic formalism allows \(M\) to be replaced by a space of orbits, or an infinite-dimensional manifold etc., and \(V\) by an algebra of polynomials, or holomorphic functions, etc. The main results of the paper deal with star-products on \(V\), i.e. formal deformations: \(A_ \varepsilon=m+\varepsilon P+\sum_{k\geq 2}\varepsilon^ kA_ k\), where \(m\) is the multiplication of \(V\), where \(P\) is a given Poisson structure on \(V\), and \(A_ k\) is a linear differential operator on \(V\) (in a general sense), vanishing on constants, such that \(A_ k(u,v)=(-1)^ kA_ k(v,u)\). As a significant example, a formula is proved, showing that the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra is obtained from a star-product for the canonical Poisson structure on the dual to the Lie algebra. This result (due to Gutt, Drinfel'd) is proved by means of the Campbell- Hausdorff series. Star-products on the tensor algebra of a universal enveloping algebra are studied, leading to a description of the Hochschild cohomology, and to a connection with the classical Yang-Baxter equations. In the last section of the paper, the author proves the existence of star-products of order 3 in general, and of infinite order in a special case (generalized Moyal product).
