Numerical experiments with the code DASSL illustrate that the standard stepsize control mechanism may produce unexpected reductions in the stepsize. This phenomenon is analyzed at the standard test problem for stiff differential equations and a new stepsize selection strategy is developped. Comparisons with the standard strategy as well as with the PI controllers of \textit{K. Gustafsson}, \textit{M. Lundh} and \textit{G. Soederlind}, [BIT 28, No. 2, 270-287 (1988; Zbl 0645.65039)] are presented. They show a dramatic improvement of the new strategy.
