Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(M\) a maximal subgroup of \(G\). A \(c\)-section \(\text{Sec}(M)\) of \(M\) in \(G\) is defined as the group \((M\cap K)/L\), where \(K/L\) is a chief factor of \(G\) such that \(L\leq M\) while \(K\nleq M\). Using this concept the authors obtain some new characteristic properties of solvable groups and \(\pi\)-solvable groups. Especially, they prove the following theorem: \(G\) is solvable if and only if there is a solvable maximal subgroup \(M\) of \(G\) such that \(\text{Sec}(M)\) is nilpotent and the Sylow 2-subgroup of \(\text{Sec}(M)\) is \(\mathbb{Z}_2\wr\mathbb{Z}_2\)-free or has class at most \(2\). The above theorem is a generalization of both a theorem of the first author [ibid. 180, No. 3, 954-965 (1996; Zbl 0847.20010)] and the DJT theorem [see \textit{B. Huppert}, Endliche Gruppen I (1967; Zbl 0217.07201), IV, 7.4 Satz].
