The paper discusses a possible final inflationary period of the universe, as a counterpart to an initial inflationary period, in the framework of alternative gravitational theories. It deals with scalar-tensor, fourth order, and higher than fourth order theories. For a class of models with an asymptotic de Sitter behaviour the authors introduce an ``effective cosmological constant''.
