A ring \(R\) has stable range 1 (in the sense of K-theory) provided that whenever \(ax+b=1\) in \(R\), there exists \(u\in R\) such that \(a+bu\) is a unit. If such \(u\) can always be chosen to be units, \(R\) is said to have unit 1-stable range, in the terminology of \textit{P. Menal} and the reviewer [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 54, No. 2/3, 261-287 (1988; Zbl 0653.16013)]. The present authors relativized this concept for ideals \(I\) of \(R\), by requiring the unit 1-stable range condition to hold whenever \(ax+b=1\) with \(a\in I\) and \(x,b\in R\) [J. Appl. Algebra Discrete Struct. 1, No. 3, 189-196 (2003; Zbl 1077.16012)]. Here they establish various elementary properties of this condition. For example, unit 1-stable range for a pair \((I,R)\) (an ideal \(I\) in a ring \(R\)) passes to \((I^{\text{op}},R^{\text{op}})\), to \((M_n(I),M_n(R))\), and to \((TM_n(I),TM_n(R))\), where \(TM_n(X)\) denotes the set of lower triangular \(n\times n\) matrices over \(X\). The ring \(QM_2(R)=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 1&-1\\ 0&1\end{smallmatrix}\right)TM_2(R)\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 1&1\\ 0&1\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) is also considered.
