Let \({\mathcal A}\) be a cocomplete abelian category with a generating set of small projectives, \({\mathcal C}\) the associated additive category of left exact sequences, \({\mathcal Z}\) its full subcategory of split short exact sequences, and \({\mathcal C}/{\mathcal Z}\) the factor category. It is shown that \({\mathcal C}/{\mathcal Z}\) is equivalent to the category of coherent (finitely presented) functors on \({\mathcal A}\), introduced by Auslander. Two natural torsion-free (TTF) theories in \({\mathcal C}/{\mathcal Z}\) based on the Serre subcategories of short exact sequences and pure short exact sequences are examined.
