The authors study the following reaction-diffusion equation which is a model of some chemotaxis phenomena: \[ u_\tau= \varepsilon^2\Delta u-k\varepsilon\nabla \bigl(u\cdot \nabla \kappa (v)\bigr) +f(u), \quad v_\tau= \Delta v+u- \gamma u \] \(t>0\), \((x,y)\in\mathbb{R} \times (0, \ell)\), with the Neumann boundary condition. He constructs a planar equilibrium solution (uniform in \(y)\) with a sharp layer and investigates the behavior of the critical eigenvalues which determines the stability of the equilibrium solution. The singular limit \((\varepsilon \downarrow 0)\) of the equation and its spectrum situation are studied by the singular perturbation method and SLEP.
