\textit{W. L. Reddy} [ibid. 15, 205-210 (1983; Zbl 0502.54044)] proved that for an expansive homeomorphism \(f\) on a compact metric space there exist a metric \(D\) and constants \(C > 0\), \(0 < \lambda<1\) and \(\varepsilon > 0\) such that for any points \(x,y\) such that \(y \in W^ s_ \varepsilon (x)\) we have \(D(f^ n x,f^ ny) \leq C\lambda^ n D(x,y)\) for all \(n>0\). In the present paper the author proves that one can choose the metric \(D\) such that constant \(C = 1\). Using this, he also proves that an expansive homeomorphism having the shadowing property generates a Smale space. The same was proved in [the reviewer, ibid. 23, 87-90 (1986; Zbl 0597.58023)], under an additional assumption.
