This is a useful review article. Recent developments concerning the genealogy of branching processes is the first topic; in particular, results from the author and \textit{Y. Le Jan} [Ann Probab. 26, 213-252 (1998)] that make sense of the idea of a genealogy for continuous-state branching processes are explained. The approach to genealogy is used in outlining a construction of superprocesses; then, connections with semilinear partial differential equations, statistical mechanics and interacting particle systems are sketched.
