The author derives a model, based on the McKendrick-von Foerster model for population dynamics, to describe the evolution of cell colonies. The main feature lies in that the generation time depends on the size of the colony. It consists of a pair of hyperbolic balance laws. Once the existence and uniqueness of a solution is obtained the asymptotic behaviour is studied in a simple case.
