The paper is dedicated to A. M. Vinogradov (1938--2019). The concept of a ``differential operator over a map'' is a very natural idea, though it is not well-known. In the paper under review, the authors review this notion and its many variants, including formal versions. It is noted that ``thick morphisms'', as put forward by the second author [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 302, 88--129 (2018; Zbl 1430.58003); translation from Tr. Mat. Inst. Steklova 302, 98--142 (2018)], provide examples of a differential operator over a map. The authors present examples of such operators for Euclidean spaces, manifolds and supermanifolds. They also consider operators found in the quantization of symplectic micromorphisms as defined by \textit{A. S. Cattaneo} et al. [Symplectic microgeometry. IV: Quantization. Preprint, \url{arXiv:2007.08167}] and compare them with pullbacks by quantum thick morphisms.
